I've been reading a Newbery Award Medal book to my class titled "The Wheel On The School." One of the main characters in the book, Lina, takes off her wooden shoe and peers into it while she is thinking. An old lady, who becomes a friend of Lina's, does her best thinking while sucking on a hard candy called a "wineball." And so, here is a list of the places where I do my best thinking: 1. In bed, right before I fall asleep, and I'm reviewing the day. 2. In a church service when I've abandoned all hope of following the message. 3. In my clawfoot bathtub, filled with hot water and Clinique's Aromatics fragrance. 4. In the car, on the twenty minute drive to work. With no radio playing. 5. In my handbound journal from the Morton Arboretum with my fifteen year old Mont Blanc fountain pen. 6. In faculty meetings where we're reviewing information that I've already received from attending the Building Leadership Meeting the day before. 7. In the middle of a page I'm reading which has suddenly reminded me of something. 8. In Starbucks with a tall, extra dry, cappuccino. 9. In the middle of a conversation on the phone when the person is boring me to tears. 10. In a rainy Saturday afternoon, sitting on the loveseat in front of our living room picture window which overlooks the river. 11. In long walks, especially if they're in the snow. 12. In the Northwoods of Wisconsin where I love to sit on a pier and listen to the loons call to each other early in the morning. 13. In a canoe, on the lake, paddling through the dark water which reaches to a seeming infinity. Links to other Thursday Thirteens! 1. atavist |

"7. In the middle of a page I'm reading which has suddenly reminded me of something."
That's exactly my problem, Bellezza, and one reason why I can't seem to read as often as I would like.
You are so on the ball - posting your TT so early. I think I posted my last one on Sat.
I need to find my think spot. I do know that when the alarm goes off in the morning, I can always think real fast and scratch something off my morning to do list so I can sleep 10 min. longer.
atavist, the other problem with not reading as much as I'd like to is falling asleep! Hello, it's 9:30 and I'm nodding off, no matter how interesting the book is.
booklogged, I figured if I don't get my TT up Wednesday night, it'll never get up. Thursday is too busy at school, as that's the day I return all the children's graded work to them and prepare plans for the next week. Finding an extra ten minutes sleep is critical!
Love the list! Love to see these glimpses of your life!
Happy one!
The bad thing about #9 is that if the other person suddenly asks for your feedback, you either get caught thinking, or you lose your thought. (That's happened a couple of times before.) On the other hand, there are those friends who have no problem if I stop them in mid-sentence because I just made a really good mental connection - because they do it right back. And then we're off on a new tangent!
Well, I posted my first Thursday Thirteen today.....the whole thing seems interesting.
Don't you just hate that leadership one day, faculty meeting the next day "go round"? I'm leadership too and it just burns me up sometimes to have to rehash everything all over again.
Seems like a lot of people do their best thinking in Starbucks. I like the ambient, don't like the coffee!
My T13 is up :)
knitting maniac, I love the glimpses into yours as well. It's good to read someone to whom I feel I can relate so easily.
laughing muse, you are so right; I hate getting busted when I'm not paying attention. I never want to hurt anyone's feelings.
elementaryhistoryteacher, I just read yours and loved it! I'm so glad you're joining in. It's a fun way to get to know one another a little better. I'm glad you know of what I speak regarding MEETINGS. p.u.!
shoshana, I bet Starbuck has something you'd like, even if it's just a hot chocolate! They used to make this melted chocolate thing that they'd serve in an espresso cup; all 1/5 inch of it equalled the calories of a Big Mac. Alas, they discontinued it.
#1 is true for me true. Unfortunately, I get so caught up thinking that I can't get back to sleep ;(
thanks for letting us get to know you a litte bit better
Great list. :) Those all sound like great places to do some thinking, except maybe in the car. I need to concentrate too much on driving here in Germany to do much thinking!
I do some of my best thinking when I'm out for a run.
Happy T13. :)
Number Two is a howler! FYI: Most Sunday morning messages aren't worth following anyway, so go ahead and think!
great list!
i want Starbucks now...
Thinking while driving is my favourite passtime. I often wondered how I got there! They say it's not the end it's the journey! How true! LOL
Oh I like this list idea. Those are all great places to think. I love to sit by the lake and think.
I think best when I'm crocheting or knitting. Sounds funny, but I'll suddenly put my craft down to go do something that I remembered!
Also, when writing, I think best at a computer keyboard rather than with pen and paper.
My TT is up: Reasons I'm Thankful for my Mom
Great list! Here's when I do my best thinking:
- In the shower
- When I cook
- When I iron (which I happen to enjoy)
- When I wash the dishes, gazing out the window at the neighborhood
- When I go for my walk on the bike trail in the late afternoon
- When I water or weed the flower beds
- In bed if I've woken up and can't fall back asleep (vicious cycle!)
So how often do you get to paddle a canoe?
les, I love your return response.
How often do I canoe? Not as often as I'd like! I have a beautiful canoe which I've taken once down the river in front of our house; the problem is bringing it back. My Passat has a sunroof, and I have no carrier for it, so I feel stuck at the end of the river. The best place for me to canoe is every summer in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, where I rent a cabin every year. The lakes are deep, and chained, and endless. That's my favorite place. (Although, I did canoe in northern Canada in High School, which was quite breathtakingly beautiful.)
Do you canoe too? :)
Hmm, last time I paddled a canoe was on Lake Vermillion (Minnesota) when we took the girls to a cabin resort called Ludlow's. That had to be at least 10-12 years ago! I actually prefer a kayak but hey, if you're ever in the mood to plan a book-blog-buddy retreat to your cabin, I'm game! ;) Stumpy (my MINI) and I could probably be there in a day. :)
Oh, les, that would be too fun! Can you imagine reading and canoeing and photographing all in the freedom of the Northwoods? I think it would be so fun to have a retreat.
Might just have to be something we seriously consider in the coming years. I'll bet Bookfool would join us.
