I was glad to be tagged by CJ, because it's always nice to know someone is interested in your opinion. Here are my responses to the non-fiction meme, of which I am hardly an afficiando:
a). What issues/topic interests you most in non-fiction (i.e, cooking, knitting, stitching, there are infinite topics that have nothing to do with novels)?
Besides the Bible, and cookbooks, the only other nonfiction I pick up regularly are origami instruction books. I love learning to fold something new as much as I like increasing my faith by reading my Bible, and increasing my family's pleasure by preparing a lovely meal.
I just realized I also own a lot of nonfiction on perfume, as well as Italy. Perfume constantly fascinates me; I love to read the basenotes and topnotes and about the design of their bottles or the conception of the fragrance. I also love Italy, and long to live there someday. By perusing the 'coffee table' picture books I have, one given as a gift from a beloved friend, I can vicariously live this dream.
b). Would you like to review books concerning those?
I hardly think I would be a good book reviewer. Doesn't one need some authority for that? What authority do I have besides what I like? The closest I can get to reviewing books is posting my opinion of them here, but I don't feel qualified to seriously review a book.
c). Would you like to be paid or do it as interest or hobby? Tell reasons for what ever you choose.
I never thought about reviewing books for a job. Somehow, I hate to connect a job with books, because they're such a pleasure to me I would not want to put an obligatory connotation with them. If I was ever to review books, it would have to be as a hobby in order to maintain the joy.
d). Would you recommend those to your friends and how?
I recommend books I love through my blog and through my book clubs. I also give my favorites as gifts.
e). If you have already done something like this, link it to your post.
This brings up a good point: I don't think I've ever posted a review of a nonfiction work. Wow! That needs to be corrected, sooner rather than later, I think.
f). Please don't forget to link back here or whoever tags you.
Done, in the initial part of this post.
Now, to hear from you. Tell us please, what nonfiction is your favorite?

Well my fellow bibliophile... what an interesting challenge. Hmmmmm. I'll have to put this together.
With the decline in reading, I'm for anything that promotes books! I don't have ones on perfume but do have ones on Italy....
Bellezza -
Thanks for taking part! Perfumes and Italy, huh? That's an interesting pair. I'd already factored in the origami reading.

I am usually not a major non fiction reader, but my own interests brought me to esoteric books on ancient magical systems and religions and I read one about Atlantis, which was good too. In the end I end up reading articles on toxicology, crystals and botany, but so far nothing major as an interest.
motherpie, when you say "decline in reading" do you mean for yourself personally, or the world in general? For me, there is NEVER enough time to read as much as I want. What books do you have on Italy?
CJ, interestingly enough, one of the best sources for origami folding instructions happens to be an origami calendar one of my students gave me for Christmas. I fold one a day in front of the class, and we're all learning so much. I'm a big perfume addict, but I don't blog too much about it so I'm not surprised you're 'surprised' by that.
daydream, I've not really read much on anything but Christianity (as far as religious reading goes). Last summer some Muslims left the Koran all around our neighborhood on people's doors, which I perused...what a mishmash of a book that is to me! It has no sequence whatsoever, and in many places seems to contradict itself, but that could be just because I don't understand (or agree with) the Muslim faith. At all.
The Koran is a book I would never touch actually. I enjoy religions that have a rich mythology to support it like the dualistic Celtic religion, druidism, Wicca and Greek religion. It's a research for some of the stories and books I am writing, so it's necessary.
I think it's so interesting that you're a writer. What a tremendous talent that is!
Hey, thanks for the tag! I just did it over on my blog. I dearly love nonfiction.
Thank you for the compliment. I actually wrote an essay how writing surpases other arts, but well that is conceited. I think that everyone with a vast imagination and love for the language and become an author. It is something that can be somewhat taught. In comparison to other talents.
Hi, Bellezza: I'm in Panama, up to my eyeballs in stuff, and can't offer anything insightful or even interesting. But I will read everyone else's responses with great interest!
Bellezza -
It seems to me that even the Muslims can't seem to agree on what the Koran says. But, if you're interested, Robert Spencer over at Jihand Watch -http://www.jihadwatch.org/ occasionally explains a stanza or whatever they're called. Even with his explanations, it seems to make little sense to me.

Nan, I knew you'd be up for it!
Atavist, are you so loving Panama? Getting enough sunshine to last you the rest of winter? I've bet you read something about investments! :)
CJ, thanks for sending the site. Not that it would help me much either, but I could go see what he's talking about. The Koran doesn't even follow an order, and it seems to contradict itself to me so often! I started writing all sorts of Bible verses in the margin, and then figured I was just being antagonistic. Not one of my goals.
Bellezza -
I'm not exactly sure where the discussion is on his site but I know he's doing it. Somewhere.
And, my goodies came today!!!!!! I cannot thank you enough. You were very, very generous. The book is beautiful and I absolutely love all the origami treats! I've put them on top of my entertainment center in my living room and they're going to stay for awhile. Thanks again!
cjh
CJ, you're so very welcome. I'm really glad you like them! (It took a long time for the box to arrive; I mailed it over a week ago, but I'm glad it's finally there.)
What an interesting conversation.
I think the older I get the more eclectic in my tastes where I am not only interested in a wide variety of non fiction and fiction but now able to suspend my personal views in order to understand what others are trying to say. I wasn't like this under 50 LOL.
Also as a writer my characters are so utterly unlike myself that I have to know what they know and understand. I've often said being an author is much like having a socially acceptable schizophrenia...
If it weren't for Joy's Non-Fiction Five challenge last year and this year's In Their Shoes, I probably wouldn't post anything about non-fiction books either.
Tangled in L'Heure Bleue has gotten me very interested in perfume too. BTW Can you make origami flowers?
I've been tagged--aacck! Well, we'll see how far I can go with this tagging. Stay tuned, Bellezza (but don't hold your breath).
Hmmmm....
A) History and historical events, biographies of people who had an interesting impact. One of my favorite nonfiction books is Galileo's Daughter by Dava Sobel. Wow, I just got lost in that. I also like books about writers and writing.
B) I would certainly do a blog review of a book if I felt strongly enough about sharing my feelings about it. I certainly don't think I have the knowledge background to do a real critical review.
C) I certainly wouldn't turn down a paycheck, ha! But as I said above I don't think I'm qualified to review nonfiction. I wouldn't mind getting paid to review books if I could do so that way I do now. I wouldn't want to become a hypercritical snob to get paid, however.
D) Again if I read something I think others should read I always recommend it both on my blog and in person. I'm big on sharing book recommendations.
E) I cannot recall the last time I read a nonfiction book and reviewed it. I gorge myself on fiction!
Thanks Bellezza. I certainly have some nonfiction volumes in my pile for this year and hope to get to them. It is one area of reading I would like to pay more attention to.
Orion, it must be interesting to conduct research for your characters. I would much prefer that than researching for say, a science topic, like we had to do in school.
Trish, I'm with you. For some reason, nonfiction just doesn't grab me. I can be led to biographies, under some duress, but in general I prefer to stay away from nonfiction. I wasn't even enticed by the nonfiction challenge although when I saw what many people were reading I thought, "Oh yeah! That's nonfiction!" Like Bill Bryson.
Princess Haiku, I can make origami flowers. When I teach a poetry unit in the spring, the children write haiku poems which we put on a water color background. Then, I teach them origami lilies to put next to each poem on the bulletin board. It's quite beautiful. I hope I remember to post on that when the time comes.
California Teacher Guy, don't feel burdened. I was just interested in what you might be reading lately.
Carl, Galileo's Daughter sounds great. I'd be interested in that, too. Thanks for responding to each and every question; I presume that you, like me, do not naturally turn to nonfiction first.
I'd love to see you do some non-fiction reviews. And, I finally did this meme today. :)
No I don't but it certainly isn't a conscious decision. It is just that I have so much fiction I would love to read that I rarely consider nonfiction. More often I read books like Robert Graves' two Claudius books (I, Claudius and Claudius the God) which are fictionalized accounts of real people, full of facts but with an interesting story thread that ties it all together.
heather, I think I'll have to review on the L*O*N*G nonfiction book I (had) to read for one of my book clubs: The Travels of A T-Shirt In A Global Economy. Every one loved it but me. This meme is causing me to think of all the nonfiction I should read and don't.
Carl, I have more fiction I want to read, too! When I read nonfiction I almost feel like I'm wasting my time. Irreverant as that sounds. I've never read I, Claudius, but I remember people loving it when it was broadcast on PBS.
