Tagged Twice, Though Tardy

From quite some time ago, when Lady Blue (of The Blue Bicycle) tagged me:

1. Pick up the book closest to you, right at this moment (no cheating you literary types!)

2. Open the book to page 123

3. Scroll down 5 lines

4. Share the 6th line with us by writing it in your post, making sure you add the book's title and its author as well

  • " 'Oh, I've been such a disgusting girl,' she went on, shaking her hair, removing with slow fingers a velvet hair ribbon." from Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov

5. Complete the tag by tagging 5 other bloggers

6. And please do the favour of including a link in your post to the blogger that tagged you!

Well, that could have been scary. Reading Lolita is such a shocking book for me I didn't know what I'd find in line 6! I'm almost done with it, so a full review is forthcoming.

Now, for Chucheria's tag from April:

1. The rules of the game get posted at the beginning.

2. Each player answers the questions about themselves.

3. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5-6 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they've been tagged and asking them to read your blog.

4. Let the person who tagged you know when you've posted your answer. So let the fun begin!!

1) What was I doing 10 years ago?

  • My son was seven, I was still single, so we spent the summer hanging out together at the pool, bike path, and Starbucks. I suspect I also went to a lot of Coach Pitch baseball games.
2) What are 5 things on my to-do list for today (not in any particular order):

  • Read, read, read, read, read. Hey, I've been waiting for this schedule since September!
3) Snacks I enjoy:

  • Ice cream, chocolate, potato chips, Planter's peanuts, popcorn. Can't have much of these things laying around the house!
4) Things I would do if I were a billionaire:

  • Still teach, still read, still worry I was parenting right. I don't think being a billionaire would change my life much other than that I could give it away to those who need money more than I do. That would feel good.
5) Three of my bad habits:

  • Second guessing myself with "Would have, should have, could have..."

  • Non essential guilt

  • Eating poorly if I'm not careful
6) 5 places I have lived:

  • Illinois

  • Ohio

  • France

  • Germany

  • that's all

Five people to tag for this one: California Teacher Guy, Beverly, 3M, Princess Haiku, Lady Blue!

Oh, I hope you have a wonderful summer break! Ice cream is a weakness for me as well--love it!

I look forward to your review of Lolita--I'll be reading in the next few months.

Hey, better late than never, right? Thanks for doing this!
Happy reading! I am tackling "The Pillars of the Earth"- can't wait.

Is the rule to scroll down five lines or five sentences?

I may participate in the second meme, if that's alright with you.

Trish, I'm within thirty pages of finishing Lolita. What a book! I'm not sure WHAT to think of it. My favorite ice cream flavors are chocolate, coffee, and lemon (not together!). What do you like?

Mrs. T, I hope you enjoy Pillars of The Earth. It's a whopper, but I found it very interesting historical fiction.

Les, you can do any meme you want, or none at all. I only tagged you for the first one because I'm so interested in what you read, but of course your responses to the second would be just as interesting. And, hey, IF you do the first one? Scroll down as many lines as you like; I'm not sure it matters. ;)

I'm not sure what to expect from Lolita because I've heard so many different things--but I read Reading Lolita in Tehran last fall and it piqued my interest.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. :) Ha ha. Usually we have just plain Vanilla Bean in the house. Lemon sounds delicious and refreshing in all this heat! I don't think I've had it since I was in Italy (I love gelato).

hey, I somehow missed to comment here. No idea why. I guess that happens when you use the PC at work, when yours died. I am happy to see your cool answers.

Trish, I adore gelato! My mom's in Italy right now, and I wanted to ask her to bring me some back. :P I read "Reading Lolita in Tehran", but ironically enough I don't remember much about it except the woman leader/teacher serving ice cream with nuts and coffee poured over it. I should skim through it again, having almost completed Lolita; IF a book would ever be banned (not that I think that should ever happyen) I can see why Lolita would be on that list especially in Iran.

Daydream, are you blogging at work? No wonder your comments are eaten by a monster. ;) I didn't tag you for the first one because Lady Blue got to you first. If you do the second, I'd love to read your responses.

OH, PS: Lolita sounds even better in English. It's quite the shocking novel for me, but I have to say that the prose is exquisite and so poetic. Nabokov does a mighty job melding something profane and vulgar as underage sex with the poetic and artistic.

Bellezza said...

Daydream, how do you always nail the novel in one sentence?! You did it before in 'Til We Have Faces, and now you did it again with Lolita. You must've made your teachers quite proud. Plus, they didn't have to wade through pages of b...sh.t to get to the point.

Actually we never studied this book at class. I just thought that it was time to get acquainted with the classics and seeing how Lolita has made quite an impression I read it and I wasn't disappointed.

Quite frankly I don't think that what I do is special, just expressing my opinions. Many people have many definitions, it's the fact that we are synced in tastes that makes you think I nail them. ;)

PS: Of course I can be a genius and not realize it yet. Either way thank you!

I'm tardy too getting to this post :p I love that 123 meme...I've done it awhile ago but it'll be interesting to see what I get this time around! I'm reading David Sedaris so it should be something comical :)

Bellezza said...

Daydream, I think your opinions are dead on. And, since we're in sync, mine probably are too! :P

Chris, I've been missing you! I've been reading all that's going on with your Dad, and the great books that arrived on your doorstep (especially Possession: WOO HOO! One of my favorite novels ever!) A little of Sedaris goes a long way with me (is he the male version of chick lit?), but I agree with you if you use him for this 123 meme it's sure to be funny.
