If you are new here, you will discover that the books I am most passionate about are the ones which are in translation. The books that have been translated from their original language into English offer me perspectives and insights that I do not often find in books which are typical best sellers in the States. Books in translation give me a virtual trip, a true escape, and for all of these reasons, I reach for them over and over. Here are some of the ones I’ve most recently purchased, but laid aside as I read the longlist for the International Booker Prize 2024 longlist:
Might I add that I am particularly eager for Her Side of The Story by Alba De Cespedes, above, as Forbidden Notebook by her “ticked all my boxes”.
Have you read any of these? Have you even heard of any of these? You can be sure I’ll write about them at some point on my blog, if any seem to particularly catch your interest.

It looks like you've got a great selection of books to look forward to when you've finished your Booker International reading! The only one of these I've read or heard of is Lonely Castle In the Mirror, which was a very interesting reading experience and one I'd definitely recommend! Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteOoh, thanks for affirming Lonely Castle in The Mirror! I have heard good things about it, which is why I bought it, but here it lies…
DeleteI have always intended to read Henning Mankell's books, but so far haven't gotten around to any. I have Faceless Killers in my stacks, so what am I waiting for??
ReplyDeleteI think you would like his books, Les. I particularly liked Italian Shoes, which is a tender variance from the Wallander series. But, Swedish crime? Nothing like it!
DeleteI am not sure if I have ever read a translated book. I should rectify that.
ReplyDeleteI’d be glad to recommend some from any particular country, or any particular genre, if you’d like.
DeleteM, what a great selection! I've heard of quite a few of them and own some of them. I definitely want to read Help Wanted, Lonely Castle, and Her Side of the Story. I love the cover of the Marias book. I posted about The Little Liar, but have yet to read it. I'm with you - I love translated literature. This post is reminding me to go through my books and see what I need to pay attention to, and start reading. xx
ReplyDeleteI know you’re with me, as I am with you, in translated literature and journals for two things! And, quite possibly chocolate? 😉 I’m looking forward to The Little Liar, and discussing any others with you when we open them up.
DeleteI also read a lot of books in translation. Lonely Castle in the Mirror is on my TBR; and Berta Isla, by Marias himself
