Paris in July 2025

It just occurred to me that it is July, and with that, comes the Paris in July annual event which I rarely miss. If we cannot go there physically, surely we must visit via literature.

I have searched my collection, and found, to no one’s surprise, that I prefer to read the classics. I will choose from these selections:

I am not sure I will read all of them…wait, I am quite sure I won’t have time to read all of them. But, each one appeals to me, and I thank Emma of Words and Peace for the opportunity to dive deeply into French literature yet again this July.

Links to the event can be found here.

(Do any of you care to join me in reading one of these titles? Tom?)

    1. I’m glad that to pointed me to the link list, which I have now added to my post. I hope to appear there soon, with the first book I read!

  2. What, me? I just saw this. I'll read any of those. Sounds great! Let me know. I would likely only read the first third of the Balzac (in French).

    1. I am just completing Bel Ami by Guy de Maupassant, and oh, it is a worthy read. I wish I would have read that with you, as it is not long. (The only reason I grabbed it was because it was close at hand on my nook; i didn't expect our library to have a copy, although I was briefly hopeful.). Shall we try the Balzac? He rarely disappoints as well…for as many pages as you can, or wish, to read.

    2. Oh, dear, if it’s not too late, let’s read something else. I began it, and it seems to be not a good fit right now. (I have too many illusions which are already lost.) Shall we try Zweig’s account of Marie Antoinette?

    3. Not too late! Not at all. The Zweig book will zip along since I will read it in English

Poor Lucien. Things get worse before they get better. Then they get worse again.

    4. Someday, I will pick up Lost Illusions…I need a break
from these lead characters, at least the one portrayed by de Maupassant. Which is not to say I don’t appreciate Bel Ami. Au contraire!

Might I add that I will also read a fabulous edition of Joan d’Arc published in the 1940’s? I almost
forgot I bought it last year.

So glad you will read Zweig with me…some of my favorite reads across the course of this blog are those we’ve shared.
